terminal types

Hi all,

Under Debian, all the terminal programs appear to have been modified to
append "-debian" to the terminal type, eg "xterm-debian". I can't figure
out why they needed to do this, and it has the result that shen I telnet
or ssh into a non-debian box, it doesn't have the appropriate
termcap/terminfo entry, and doesn't have a clue what I'm running. The
same is true from any linux VC (terminal type "linux") to something
other than linux.

Anybody know a good way to deal with this? I'm sick of setting the TERM
variable manually every time I ssh to uni ...

Many thanks,

Richard
