Newbie, SO5, writing DOS files

As a new user with a dual-booting Pentium I was delighted that
StarOffice5 (22 hours download, no problems installing, lovely
programme) would read files from the DOS partition, particularly a
large indexing task for a publisher.

Then I tried to write the file back to /DOS_hda1, for the good reason
that my modem turned out to be a cheap crippled Win-modem and my
publisher points out that there is nothing on the floppy disc, as far
as his Windows programmes are concerned.

SAMBA seems to be the answer. Cutting a long story short, why does

smbmount //localhost/ /tmp (or any other newly created directory)

throw an exception "Cannot resolve /tmp" ?

To put the question another way, is there any way of searching MAN or
INFO to put a meaning to "resolve"?
