[wellylug] Mandrake 9 / RedHat 8

I have installed RH8 on a PC which has onboard Voodoo3 video. RH detected
the vid, installed necessary drivers and is good.
Trying to install mandrake9 on the same box and it craps out very early in
the piece with messages about video.
Doing a text install gets it through to the end, but when rebooting it fgets
to the point where (I guess) it would  be starting X and
blanks the screen.  
Are RH and Mdk that different?
Lycoris installs beautifully on this box, BTW
