Pop your antenna in an elevated corner reflector, so the energy is directed
into the field and over obstacles. you may be surprised at the range you
get.
I know a chap who mad a "bow tie" antenna with a tin can reflector, He was
logging onto networks across the harbour with it. He wrote it up in an
article for "Silicon Chip" magazine. Have a look at recent issues and
replicate his design.

Wireless ranges.  I am looking at supporting an upcoming local airshow.
 Would wireless LAN work across an airfield that is typically 1 km
square?  I am talking of the standard NICs and aerials.
