I tried a later kernel (2.4.16 and 17) with my realtek 8139 and they 
both filaed to work with it. 

Reading the updates to the kernel, this appears to be a known problem. 
(Running from porous memory here) 

But it works OK on the 2.4.7-10 kernel that came with redHat 7.2.
