[wellylug] Cannot Uninstall Package

I cannot uninstall packages that I have downloaded off the internet and
installed on SuSE Linux 8.0. For example,

	rpm -e iscan-1.3.0-1.i386.rpm

which should uninstall the package, returns

	iscan-1.3.0-1.i386.rpm is not installed

as does

	rpm -U iscan-1.3.0-1.i386.rpm

which should upgrade the package, whereas

	rpm -i --nodeps iscan-1.3.0-1.i386.rpm

which is what I used to install it in the first place, returns

	iscan-1.3.0-1.i386.rpm is already installed

I tried

	rpm --rebuilddb

and then tried uninstalling again, but that did not help.

I've had the same problem with packages for two completely different
applications, the only ones installed from rpm-format packages from the
internet that I have attempted to uninstall. What is happening here?

I've looked at the rpm documentation, but I cannot see what I'm doing wrong.
My guess is that rpm is looking somewhere else to uninstall and upgrade than
it is to install. If so, I have not seen anything documented about how to
put the two things in sync. I'm new to this, so I expect there is a simple
solution.
