The offer of PC's is excellent but there are a number of minor issues to
cover off before we all get carried away.
- Additional details from the Trust are needed such as: What organisations
are eligible, when do the PC's become available, what is the complete
specification (screens, keyboards, mice, hdd size, floppy, CD, NIC, modem),
where they can be picked up, who can store some while they are
built/distributed? One person should get this information, any volunteers?
- Some suitable recipients needs to be identified and then approached about
the offer from the 2020 Trust. They will need to make their submission to
the Trust and we will have to work out a timetable and authority to pick the
PC's up. Everyone should work on this but it should come together to a
couple of people to coordinate inforamtion, any volunteers?
- A workshop would be ideal for bulding the PC's if there are a reasonable
number. This can be arranged once the numbers are known, but can we get one
so we try a variety of builds and come up with an ideal?
Generally there seems to be discussion on networked machines. However an
approach should be taken on this covering the following scenarios:
a) Stand-alone PC, printer direct attached, possibly modem to Internet.
b) Small, new network (workgroup) of desktop PC's, no server, shared
printer, possibly modem to Internet to be shared.
c) Small, new network with file/print/Internet connection server, some PC's
d) Existing network with some or all the services listed. Integration to a
Win network of inderminate age/revision. May require some network redesign
in this case so becomes more problematic and may be best handled as a
separate project by someone?
In each of the above scenarios it will not be difficult to come up with the
required additional services etc, it is more a matter of cutting them down
rather than building them in.
thoughts?
