[wellylug] A little project.... : The pragmatic approach

Agreed. I have looked at the site, www.2020.org.nz and they confirm that.
It seems to me that we should be looking at a 1998 Linux install if
possible, in order to fit the software to the hardware that it was developed
for. What kills a PC is loading more recent ( read 'bigger' ) software
that does better things but slower. This is true for whatever OS we are
talking about.
The alternative is the K12 approach, and that is using the low cost PC's as
slim clients for the server based software.
Do we have a choice here?
I notice that the next batch of PC's from 2020 are not scheduled until 2003.
Can we put together a K12 package by then? K12 has been developed for
schools. There is a lively community on the Inet.
I have a live project for that approach with sufficient funding to purchase
one reasonable server to support six clients. I am ready to begin on that
as discussed two months ago. We have a project team. Perhaps a parallel
project might be helpful?
I note that IBM are thinning down at the moment. Perhaps they might help
out. I will enquire.
