Yes, that's why things are easier now. When it wasn't included some
while ago installing evolution was plainly suicidal.

The most common method for all but beginners is to use fetchmail to
retrieve the mail, and deliver it locally through procmail. Procmail is
the most powerful mail filter around, albeit not easy for beginners.
That's why I find all filters in email clients completely useless.
Procmail's better (if you can handle it). While you're playing with
email cients, it pays to use procmail to store a safety copy of
incoming mail in a separate file (also very advisable while playing
with procmail rules). It's also a good idea to save mailing list emails
into separate places (there are procmail filters for common list
managers on my web site). Another advantage is that you don't need to
configure each mail client for download and can switch clients as you
like. Useful until there is a killer client available.

It's not entirely clear to me what exactly was configured and by what
on Red Hat, so I can't quite say how it's done with SuSE.
