I think short term, we need any hub at all. A small 4 port hub, sometimes
found in the obsolete basket would work fine.  That may be what was used the
other night?  From that, we will be able to assess LAN demands and adjust?

I agree that switch performance might be useful once we are up and going.
Seems higher priority will be to work out how to implement if it can't be
usefully installed over 500K cable?  Wake on LAN cards will be necessary?  I
have no experience with them.  I note that an alternative is to boot the
Eth0 from a floppy, see http://www.rom-o-matic.net/

I have a Pentium 400 behind Coyote running RH7.2 that might make a useful
starting point.  Better offers?
