Hi Lindsay,
Do you have to still have to nominate them if you set them to PnP auto? If
you do, you should only have to nominate them by eth0, eth1 etc. If you set
the cards manually, then when you nominate you have to specify all the
parameters, and it should in the form of eth0 io,irq,,,, eth1 io,irq,,,,
Be aware though you can't by nominating with the io and irq settings
override the settings that PNP set initially. So if PnP suto will only set
one nic up, then you may have to set them up manually, and you will of
course have to set the bios to disable PnP autoconfig as well, otherwise
when you boot up the PnP bios will change the settings to what it feels
like when you boot up.
Incidentally, is the pnp configuration done by the isapnp tools after
booting is it a part of the kernel. I thought kernel auto configuration
was done only on post 2.3 kernels. You can check this by watching the boot
up, to see if 3c500... is mentioned before or after init, before being
kernel doing pnp config, after being the isapnp tools. If it is done using
isapnp tools, which uses pnpdump, you can actually modify the
/etc/isapnp.conf to use what ever settings take your Fancy. see the man
pages isapnp, pnpdump
I have areasonable knowledge of how linux works in general and I am sure
that I can help solve this problem, but I can probably be of more use in
person. So if you are really in a spot, I would be keen to come and have a
hack at it.
