No, that American rubbish is default (surprise surprise). You would
probably want to set the paper size to A3:

GS_OPTIONS="$GS_OPTIONS -sPAPERSIZE=a4"
export GS_OPTIONS

Then use A3. Call gs directly as ps2pdf does if you like, making mods
as fits.

The pdf support was much improved later, make sure to use a version 7
gs (7.05 has just been released, and it's now GPL as well).

Not strange... I am always surprised if anything opens a ps/eps file at
all, given the ten zillion possibilities of how to use postscript.
