Except that the winmodem driver (for Conexant modem) is troublesome or
impossible to get working properly with 2.2 kernels.

Not applicable really. Machine is meant to run as standalone, dialup
workstation.

I should have explained. The instant KPPP logs in, it immediately
disconnects. I've got a perfectly good working setup in
/etc/ppp/peers/Paradise, but KPPP doesn't want to just use it and leave
it alone.
