Interestingly I was just at a conference in the UK on GIS whwre the keynote
speaker was Tony Booth. I assume no relation :-)

I have been involved with the Eagle(shpfile) and NZAM (MID/MIF) versions of
this data. Note that while it is technically free, it does have errors & is
only available in LINZ's geotiff format (as I understand it, this is not the
normal geotiff format). The commercial versions have been checked/corrected &
reformatted by th erespective companies, I feel their work is pretty necessary
& good value generally.
If you obtain the LINZ data, you'll need to convert to a more useable GIS
format prior to use. There is no freely available reformatter at present that I
know of, but the format is available if you want to write your own.
NIWA can onsell MID/MIF versions of the data at a pretty good price (wearing my
NIWA GIS hat :-) if you are interested, email me there at b.wood at niwa.co.nz
