On the subject of recycling old boxes, there is a very intresting article on Salon detailing some fairly large scale recycling of old boxes with linux installed on them.
The article:

The FreeGeek organisation
http://www.freegeek.org/
another intresting project is the Computerbank project in Australia:
http://www.computerbank.org.au/
Which is an Australian initiative to supply free GNU/Linux systems to low income individuals, community groups and disadvantaged schools.
and a few other links to similar stuff:
http://opencollector.org/freecomputers.html
http://www.accrc.org/
There is also a good article in the latest issue(paper) of Linux Journal on building a low resource system.
It would be great if a project like this could get off the ground in wellington - i see having a venue for storeage and building as an issue.
