I think many versions of Abiword have bad font problems; so it's not
just you in all likelihood! Perhaps a very recent version of Abiword
will fix that.  I haven't followed development.

One thing is for sure: KDE will work very poorly on the boxes that have
only 32MB of RAM, and the same with Gnome 1.  Perhaps Gnome 2 would be
better, but I doubt it will be good enough.
