I'll toss in my $0.02....

A search on DSE website returned the following:

http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/3e8b358b03991b4a273fc0a87f9906ed/Search/Run

returns 2 items, PCI Intel chipset modems supposedly suitable for Windoze &
Linux.

Note the second price of $3978 is for an OEM pack of 100 modems. I hadn't
realised DSE were moving into this market.

The following site lists a reasonably comprehensive (esp for Intel) list of
Linux drivers for 2.2 & 2.4 kernels.

http://www.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers_linux.htm

So, making the (risky?) assumption that the model sold by DSE is a reasonable
quality product, it may well be a viable solution for Linux users. Personally I
have found no real difference (once your cpu gets above about 300Mhz) in
performance or reliability of hard vs soft modems & haven't chased up chipset
specs to see which this is.

My modem preference is external for Linux, simply because they will generally
work out of the box, without trying to download & install proprietary drivers.
I've used the Speedcom external (Rockwell/Conexant chipset), at around $85,
it's relatively cheap for such beasts.

The Genius internal Lucent (Agere) chipset PCI modem works pretty well if you
do need an internal. At around $50, it's reasonably priced, & I believe Linux
support for the Lucent chipset is as good as for any Wimodem.

Unless you enjoy tinkering with Linux, IMHO the driver hassles generally make
the extra cost of the external well worth it :-)
