US Robotics (aka 3Com) may cost a little more but will work every time.
I have a USR 56k external and it never fails to connect (with Linux - the
server for
my HAN (home area network) is a p200 running E-Smith

I understand you are located in the Waiararapa somewhere - town or country?
Electric fences can play merry hell with dial-up connections.
Dynalink sell a modem that they claim is more resistant to electric fence
interference.
