Welcome, brother!

Your friend (or many people here) could help you configure Linux to
launch X Windows automatically for you if that's what you prefer. I'm
not familiar with Mandrake's init scripts or I would myself. 

You don't have to go through the whole ritual if you always just want to
go straight into a GUI environment. Maybe Real Men always work from a
console, but life's too short to do that with a desktop machine all the
time...
