[wellylug] RPC services lost ... please help find them !

Hi 

My NIS/NFS server has stopped working. It stays up for weeks at a time
and I have made no intentional changes.

Having read up on RPC as I understand it the "portmap" daemon  supplies
service numbers to the registered rpc services. 

If I start portmap on its own (ie no other NIS/NFS daemons running) and
run "rpcinfo -p" it will timeout after a few minutes. Yet if I run the
same command without portmap running then it immediately knows there is
no server. What is preventing portmap talking to any rpc service ?

Any help appreciated. I may get there by myself but a shortcut would be
nice.
