Your machine is called mercury (if you gave it that name on setup).
What the hosts file does is relates IP address to host (aka machine)
names.

If you have in your hosts file the following

<yourIPaddr> localhost.localdomain localhost mercury venus mars

then this associates your IP address with the *names*:
localhost.localdomain
localhost
mercury
venus
mars

If you have the IP address as 127.0.0.1 then this aliases the local
machine to all those names.
