[wellylug] A real newbie needs help - internet connection

Dear all,
 
Just joined the list and needs help on internet connection with mandrake 9.1.

After succesfully installing the mandrake 9.1, I'm still struggling on setting up the internet connection. Drak wizard identified that I have winmodem and ethernet card (which I don't use). After following the guidance of setting up, it said modem ready..then initialyzing modem...this takes a long time (but not connected...just look like freezing).

I've tried to search in the net for the solutions through google but without being succeed. 
 
My modem is Puretek PT 3525 voice modem (internal modem) v92 conexant chipset, data fax voice, vice speakerphone function, internal PCI modem card (it says so on the box).

I am sure that somebody has the answers..:)
 
 
Some data:
Pentium 3 677Mhz. 40gb partitioned into c: (windows me) and d: (mandrake 9.1)
Cd rom
internet OK on the other OS
current isp: slingshot
