[wellylug] Backing up part of NTFS filesystem ? (In order to install linux safely afterwards)

Hi,

I want to backup the user data on a windows XP box prior to installing
Linux. The amount of data happens to over 1CD's worth and I wanted to
preserve the full filenames. Is there an open-source solution that runs
directly on the Windows box.

The best I can think of is running tar to produce multi-volume output
files (say 650 MB in size) and then putting each file to CDR.
This involves the installation of cygwin.

Is there a simple piece of open-source software to do this ?
