[wellylug] windozes 64bit woes:

I think a couple of things need to be noted here.

Firstly, I don't recall people having any problem moving from 16bit 8086
and 286 machines to 32bit 386es and 486es. On the other hand, the
advances between the generations of older Intel CPUs were far greater
than we're likely to see between Intel and AMD's 32 and 64bit offerings.

Also, the 64bit CPUs are, at this stage at least, more suited to server
applications. The price alone - $682.44 including GST for a 1.8ghz
Opteron, as opposed to $205 for a 1.8ghz Athlon XP 2500+ - can attest to
this.

There is, at this stage, no point in paying an extra $450 for a CPU for
a desktop computer. Something like a database server, on the other hand,
could certainly make use of the true benefits of a 64bit CPU. Server
software like this is certain to be released in 32 and 64bit builds long
before any desktop software is considered.
