Time to upgrade to an LCD monitor, then you can keep the stereo. Prices are 
falling to where 17" LCDs are getting affordable.

In general, computer type speakers are pretty poor compared to even average 
hifi system speakers. I've got a couple of Wharfdale bookshelf speakers in my 
room, they only cost me $45.00 (including stands) and don't seem to affect 
the monitor (but they aren't right beside it) and they sound pretty good.
