I think it might have been to do with usb hotplugging - discover and
associated libraries hadn't been upgraded. Today's update did.

Setting up discover (1.5-1.4.3) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/discover ...
System startup links for /etc/init.d/discover already exist.
Detecting hardware: e100 emu10k1 i810_audio usb-ohci
Loading e100 module.
/lib/modules/2.4.20-3-k7/kernel/drivers/net/e100/e100.o: init_module: No
such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-3-k7/kernel/drivers/net/e100/e100.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20-3-k7/kernel/drivers/net/e100/e100.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-3-k7/kernel/drivers/net/e100/e100.o: insmod e100
failed
Loading emu10k1 module.
Loading i810_audio module.
Loading usb-ohci module.

Messages however point to something else awry. I know that to get the
kernel going I had to disable the APIC in bios, until I did that I
couldn't get the ethernet card to go........
hmm, too much of a coincidence...

I'll keep you posted.
