An addition to this thread that may be of interest:
Users of Intel 845 chipset boards are likely to have a problem enabling UDMA
for any IDE drive, so you will be getting 3-4Mb/sec instead of 40-50Mb/sec..
Well documented on the Intel web site.
I have found the 2.4.20 kernel fixes the problem, even though Intel suggest
2.5.12.
For user of non-Intel boards using the 845 chipset, a BIOS upgrade may fix it.
See your m/b manufacturered web site for info (& you may need a Windoze box to
write the floppy to flash the BIOS)
(RH8 seems to include the patch, despite being an earlier kernel. Mandrake 9
does not)
