Hi Lyndsay

We use Debian to connect directly (i.e. via TCP/IP, not via a Windows or
Samba Server) to our Xerox printer.  I presume this would also work for the
HP JetDirect printers (this page:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj02769.html suggests
yes).  

There may be tools available to handle configuration, but we don't run X and
I found I had to edit the /etc/printcap file directly.  The man file (i.e.
man printcap) contains the appropriate instructions to install a remote
printer.  I only had to provide an IP and a local spool directory, and the
defaults were fine for the rest.

I'll be happy to provide more details off-list if you want them.

Afraid I can't help with the Samba config.  Hopefully someone else can.
