I'm not sure if I understand your question, but here's an answer to what I
think you are asking...
There is no iptables 'file' that I am aware of. However, many Linux distros
save the current iptable setup to a text file using the iptables-save
command, and restore it on next boot using the iptables-restore command.
My advice would be to tinker with the existing iptables setup using the
iptables command directly rather than editing the file generated by
iptables-save. Then use iptables-save to save your changes permanently.
