To change your hostname, use the hostname command, eg.

hostname pippin

will change your computer's hostname to pippin

Techincal note: this will change your DNS name. for your Samba name (the name 
Windows machines will see it as), that's a different story, which requires 
you to edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, but for connecting to xtra, you 
don't need to worry about that just yet! Confused? :-)
