Well have fixed host and domain names and removed gateway numbers. 
 Rebooted okay - didn't try KDE, but will do so.  Connects okay but 
disconnects after 20-30 secs.

Still getting error message re Gnome not running correctly as couldn't 
look up interenet address.

Actually this may prevent me getting in via KDE - it did before.
