Righto, I'm in KDE using kmail and it hasn't disconnected after 22 minutes.

Log on seemed fine via KDE didn't get message re connecting to internet.

Opened terminal in KDE and /etc/hosts file says
127.0.0.1    localhost.localdomain   local host

The names on logging in and in the terminal seemed to match what I used before 
in sysconfig.

I want to configure my printer but the printing option talks about KLJetTool 
for HP laserjet and I have an Epson Stylus 600.  Doesn't appear to be an 
option to add a different printer.

Making progress :-)
