Hi,
First off I don't have any problems actually getting things to work. I am
just not sure which is the best of a number of choices.
Firstly at the kernel level there is the choice between OSS and ALSA. At the
moment I am using OSS stuff and will switch to ALSA when I get round to it.
Next the choice of sound servers
esd : the gnome sound server. Produces pretty dreadfuil sound and does not
seem to have any active development ?!
arts : the kde sound server. Sound quality seems Ok and does a respectable
job. Does not seem to be under active development ?
nas : A network aware sound server which seems to have a fair amount of
application support even if neither of the two main desktop enviroments have
adopted it. (I have not tried this one yet for sound quality.) This project
does seem to have some development activity associated with it.
I want to use a single sound server at least under the two main desktop
enviroments ( and preferably other window managers too.) Which one is the one
to go with ? (it might of course not be on the list !)
Any opinions gratefully received. Thanks.
regards
Nigel
