OSS is the path of least resistance at the moment; ALSA requires kernel
patches (but may be your only choice if OSS doesn't support your
soundcard). For the upcoming 2.6 kernel series, ALSA will be the
default (IIRC).

I can only assume there's something odd going on if it produces dreadful
sound; it works fine for me :-) - how did you discern that it's not
under active development?

The problem you'll encounter is that some software will support esd,
some will support arts, some will support both; generally, using the
default one for your desktop environment is a good idea. Practically
nothing you're likely to use under linux supports NAS :-(
