Okay, starting with a potentially stupid question, but do you have
an /initrd folder?
You need this empty folder to be present in order for the pivot_root() to
succeed when your system boots.
To boot into single user mode: type 'linux single' from lilo, or find
grub instructions here:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/s1-rescuemode-booting-single.html
If you can't get that far, put in the installation cd, and progress
through the installation until you can get a shell on alt+f2. From there
you can mknod() /dev/hda[n] and mount up the partition manually.
