The code base is the same. Sun uses the following recipe...

1) Take a stable release of OpenOffice.org
2) Add additonal third party proprietry fonts (like from AGFA and other 
sources)
3) Add in an improved third party proprietry dictionary and thesaurus 
(the same one which MS purchases to include in MS Office)
4) Add in a third party database (Adabas)
5) Add a support contract to your taste

Voila... you have Star Office. So if you desire additional fonts, an 
improved dictionary & thesaurus, a database and/or support then Star 
Office is for you, Otherwise OOo is all you need.

NB: StarOffice effectively has zero cost for education use (other than a 
request to advise Sun how many user you have).
NBB: Sun established OOo and gifted the initial code base(8 million 
lines) to the community and have continued to heavily deveop the product 
so they deserve a pat on the back.
