Just to qualify my statement, I previously worked at the helpdesk for one of
the largest ISPs in New Zealand.

You mention reliability, If that's a concern and if you have a choice, go
for an external ADSL modem.
The internal units draw their power directly from (obviously) the computer
and we frequently saw situations where people were getting suboptimal ADSL
connections due to using an internal ADSL modem, switching to a external
modem with an external power supply solved the problem.
Most of these people were on the edge of the range Telecom advise is
suitable for ADSL but in all circumstances you're going to have less chance
of a signal problem with an externally powered unit.
Although lots of people are fine with internal units, if I was running
something where ADSL connectivity was critical to my business (such as a
cyber café) I'd go with an external unit if for nothing but peace of mind.
So in summery :), if circumstances permit, go for an external unit.
