Its actually very very simple to set up a script to get your IP and email
it to an address. I can provde a copy of the script I run.

I have this setup at home and it works very very well. I'd recommend an
ethernet ADSL router over an internal modem every time. It gives you a
number of advantages such as a DHCP server, NAT, pinholeing and a very
basic firewall in a very small unobtrusive box, with the added advantage
that you don't need to try and find an ADSL modem that hs Linux support as
all ethernet routers will work fine.
