Hi,

just a quick note to say that I've had some success with jhead
(http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/) and GTKam.  jhead is actually
pretty cool -  you can get it to automatically rotate photos to the
correct orientation specified in the jpg meta information (if your
camera supplies it).  The rotation will be done without any loss of
image quality - clever, more clever than windows XP.  jhead 2.0 is
better than 1.9 in that it makes it a little easier to do this.

(but some stuff is out of date now).  But the red eye removal code for
gimp works rather well.
