I would also recommend doing it by hand.  If you have decided on a
database, then read the doc's for it, as databases vary in what
datatypes they offer, and what features they provide.  

What do you want to do with the database?
What are you going to use to interface with your database(eg webpage,
OpenOffice ....)?
