[wellylug] Need some help with Gentoo

I've just installed Gentoo 1.4_rc4 and have a few issues that someone
might be able to help with:

1/ I cannot seem to print to and 'Windows' (or Samba) shared printers on
the network (bloody annoying, didn't have any issues under Mandrake or
RedHat but can't seem tog et anything to work under Gentoo!),

2/ I have created 3 directories under /mnt called win_c, win_d and win_e
ro mount my Windows partitions one. These directories are flagged to be
red/write/execute for any user but when I mount any of the Windows
partitions the security reverts to only allowing root access to the
directory. I have pasted a section of my /etc/fstab below.

# Mount the Windows partitions
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat user,defaults
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,defaults
/dev/hda6 /mnt/win_e vfat user,defaults

(Its also proabably worth noting what happens to the directory
securities when I mount the Windows partitions so I have included cut
and pastes of 'before' and 'after' mounting as well)

before:

drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 192 Jun 1 15:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 384 Jun 2 14:50 ..
drw-r--r-- 12 root root 300 Jun 2 14:38 .init.d
drwx------ 2 root root 72 May 31 07:06 cdrom
drwx------ 2 root root 72 May 31 07:06 floppy
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 48 Jun 1 15:27 win_c
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 48 Jun 1 15:27 win_d
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 48 Jun 1 15:27 win_e

after:

drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 192 Jun 1 15:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 384 Jun 2 14:50 ..
drw-r--r-- 12 root root 300 Jun 2 14:38 .init.d
drwx------ 2 root root 72 May 31 07:06 cdrom
drwx------ 2 root root 72 May 31 07:06 floppy
drwxr--r-- 14 root root 16384 Jan 1 1970 win_c
drwxr--r-- 40 root root 32768 Jan 1 1970 win_d
drwxr--r-- 70 root root 16384 Jan 1 1970 win_e

If it makes any difference I'm running reiserfs as the filesystem on my
Linux drives.
