True, it was user error - I screwed up :/
I am now in the process of rebuilding the laptop, this time using FAT32
for the XP partition as at least then I know I shouldn't screw anything
up easily.
It seems that I did clobber the NTFS partition totally but at least the
laptop is only a couple of days old so doesn't have any data on it as
yet!
Another case of living and learning I suppose :D
