run the 'hostname' command.  It'll return your system's hostname (shock 
and awe)

Make sure that it's listed against your computer's IP address in /etc/hosts:

sam at vorpal:~$ hostname
vorpal
sam at vorpal:~$ cat /etc/hosts | grep vorpal
10.32.32.238      vorpal
