[wellylug] strange display

Hi,

I have Mandrake 9.  I wanted to try Gimp and IceWM.  Both load okay  but 
display symbols made of various lines instaed of words in the menus so I 
can't use them.  I've checked dependencies and found that some are not 
installed - just sitting in my system though.
I tried installing using the Package Manager but nothing happened. 
 Could someone please tell me the command to us - is it
rpm -i <filename>
I don't seem to be succesful with that.  Do I need to add
.rpm   after the filename?

PS I do have the CDs but had a problem in mounting, though I was reading 
them okay.
