The tar archive is compressed. That's what the .gz means. (Sometimes you 
see .tgz instaed of .tar.gz - same thing.)

The easiest way to deal with this is to say
tar xzvf gimp-print-4.2.5.tar.gz

The z option tells tar to uncompress the file.
