Hi Colin

The Mandake8 was from a CD I got from you at one of the Johnsonville
meetings last year.

Hi Eugene,

Some time back I did pretty much the same as you have described with
Mandrake v8 and got the same results - and ended up doing the new
install as
well. After that it worked really well. I think it is a problem with the
upgrade process rather than the CD's.

I did not supply Mandrake v8 at the installfest - is this meant to be
v9.1?

I am pleased that you enjoyed the Installfest.
Has anyone heard how it went the previous Saturday at the University?

Regards

Hi Colin

I've had some problems installing Mandrake. Initially I told the distro
to
upgrade Mandrake 8. All went well up to the point where it had to
update
the boot record, at which point it claimed that it could not do that due
to
some error. On rebooting I could still access my NT platform, but only
got
kernel panic when trying to run Mandrake. I tried to reinstall using
rescue
option, and a few other options available from the startup menu but the
machine locked up with no screen display for any option.

After nuking the whole partition from NT, I did a new install which
seemed
to work fine. Do you think this is a related problem to the incorrect
copies?

Once I got the new install running, everything seemed to run smoothly. I
have not yet used the machine for any length of time, so I do not know
if
any more problems are lurking.

By the way, I think the presentation and venue for the installfest was
great. Pity I did not have the time to stay and enjoy.

Prior to and at the Installfest on Sunday I created copies of Mandrake,
Red
Hat, and Knoppix disks.

Unfortunately it appears my CD-writer did not correctly copy some disks
on
the day and my copy of Mandrake 9.1 disk 2 also had an error in it. I
have
the Red Hat images and a clean CD with Knoppix, but could someone please
bring to the meeting next Monday a clean copy of Mandrake 9.1 disk 2.

If anyone that purchased CD's, that has not yet contacted me, finds
problems
with reading the CD's please contact me directly for replacements.
