I'm using Gimp-1.2.3 and it hides this function in the File menu.
	File->Acquire->Screen Shot

Under RedHat 9 it's even easier. Simply hit the 'Print Screen' button on
your keyboard. 

If you like terminal driven solutions you should check out this link for
instructions on how to use xwininfo, xwd and ImageMagick.
