[wellylug] keyboard woes

When i first installed mandrake 9.0 on my home PC, i was using a dvorak
keyboard.
I later decided i didn't have the patience to learn to type again, so i
put a qwerty on the machine.
I then went to the mdk control centre and changed my keyboard layout.
this worked just fine, or so i thought...

occassionaly something goes wrong. If i don't shut down the PC properly
(it happens sometimes), then during the next boot it asks me if i want
to force a check. If i press the "y" key, an "f" is printed to the
screen.
likewise if something goes horribly wrong during boot it asks for my
root password (i have a dodgy hard drive, must replace soon).. but i
have to type it in dvorak style. It's as if i don't have a qwerty
keyboard until X starts or something...

where do i look to fix this??
