I know some bureaucrats wasted some extraordinary amount buying
newzealand.com, but as far as I've noticed domain names have one main
requirement - being memorable, not descriptive. I don't go looking for
books on books.com (although I'm sure it exists) or searching the web on
search.com.
If I'm looking for a organization that has a nice one word name I'd try
nice.co.nz or nice.com otherwise I wouldn't waste time guessing, I'd go search.
This 'organisation' doesn't have a nice one word name, but a more or less
descriptive name so just go for a memorable domain name.
A quick review of NZ LUGs shows:
auckland.lug.net.nz
christchurch.lug.net.nz
dunedin.lug.net.nz
hblug.debian.co.nz
klug.org.nz
lug.co.nz
www.wlug.org.nz
wlug.paradise.net.nz
wellington.lug.net.nz
wlug.naos.co.nz
www.linux.net.nz
NB we already have a link from "wellington.lug.net.nz" (who owns that?) to
the old site that now redirects to the naos site.
So given that we already have a wellington.lug address we certainly don't
need a descriptive one, I'd be happy with wellylug.org.nz or
wellylug.geek.nz just to be ahead of the crowd :-).
