[wellylug] imap server build - why is $HOME a good mailbox root ?

Hi,

I have installed the uw-imapd server. I am using the debian version. Now
the default mailbox root is $HOME which is also the upstream (from
debian) default.

I want to understand why this is a good default. Changing it is a matter
of getting the source and recompiling. I would like to use
/var/mail/<your login> as the mail root.

A problem with using the current default is that my home directory has a
lot of files and it takes a long time for some mail clients to list the
files in order that I can subscribe to the relevant folders.

A second alternative would be $HOME/mail. This would have the advantage
of keeping the mail in my home directory (convenient for backup of all
my files without the subscribing problem.

What do you think ?

regards
Nigel
